The Post Office
The Post Office in Iowa was located initially into a Beaux Arts-style building downtown. This Post Office was constructed in 1904, using Indiana Limestone, and it was expanded 27 years later, in 1931. It functioned as the city’s main post office until the year 1975. Then, a new location was built for the Iowa City Post Office. But the original building is now listed into the National Register of Historic Places, so we can safely say that the Post Office really has a history in the city of Iowa.
And now, if all this history has made you want to go visit the Iowa City Post Office, here are the times when you can do that…

Other Reasons That Makes Iowa City Great
Oh, and if that is not enough for you, here are 5 great reasons why Iowa City is a great place to visit and live and enjoy life:
1. The Food is amazing
It might not sound so intriguing culinary wise, but Iowa City is famous for some of its restaurants. One of the best known and popular is The Hamburg Inn. Many past presidents stopped to eat here on their way to the Iowa Caucus, and thus the reputation of this restaurant only grew and grew. It does help that they can offer iconic dishes like their drinkable “pie shakes” – which are created by blending together pie, ice cream and milk…
2. UNESCO
Iowa City was granted the honor of being designated a UNESCO City of Literature, because of the rich cultural environment and because there are 49 known writers that have ties to the city. Those 49 writers are all featured, well, their words are featured on bronze-relief panels in the sidewalk. Where can you find these panels? Well of course, down Iowa’s Avenue Literary walk…
3. Wooden nickel
Also in Iowa City you can see the world’s largest wooden nickel? It has become an attraction for tourists and residents alike and it is something that stirs up the imagination. Imagine a 12-foot-wide nickel, that has an image of a bison and it’s positioned between two posts, high in the sky, near the Iowa City Field.
4. Gifts from the past
Do you like to see how the world used to be millions of years ago? In Iowa City you can also do that, if you visit the Coralville Lake and the Devonian Fossil Gorge. Floods in 1993 and 2008 helped form the Gorge, washing away everything in their paths and thus helping to uncover fossils, as old as 375 million years. There was a Devonian ocean floor, and people can actually visit it and take pictures and learn about geology and other interesting facts about our history.
5. Opportunity
If you are a student or a very cultural person, than Iowa City is definitely the place to be. There are over 31.000 students in Iowa City and the city is known for its top public research universities. These universities mainly focus on studies of the arts, sciences and humanities, and coupled with writing workshops, a famous independent film festival and many other cultural activities, Iowa City is clearly one of the top cultural centers of the American heartland.
